Russian President Vladimir Putin has renewed his threats to the West as he vowed to strengthen Russia’s army following his botched invasion of Ukraine.
In a new threat to Ukraine’s allies and NATO, the former KGB head boasted of Russia’s nuclear prowess and claimed its new intercontinental ballistic missile would be put on combat duty before the end of this year.
RS-28 Sarmat, also known as Satan 2, is Russia’s biggest and deadliest ICBM with a range of up to more than 11,000 miles and a maximum speed of up to 16,000 mph.
The 200-ton hypersonic, liquid-fueled missile can be equipped with up to 16 nuclear warheads and is capable of reaching any target on the planet while evading modern anti-missile defense systems.
The ICBM was for the first time successfully tested back in April, whereas Satan 2 missiles could according to Putin be deployed by the end of the year.
“We will continue to develop and strengthen our armed forces, taking into account potential military threats and risks,” Putin said at a Tuesday ceremony at the Kremlin before branding Russian soldiers as “real heroes” and saying they have shown “courage” and “professionalism” throughout the war with Ukraine.
The Russian president went on to add that the first batch of RS-28 Sarmat missiles will be placed on combat duty before the year ends. It is unclear how many missiles he was referring to.
The warning comes shortly after Kremlin mouthpieces bragged that just one missile could destroy entire Great Britain and that it could reach European countries like France and the UK in just a matter of minutes.
