Authorities said that the discovery was made by an inmate looking for plastic bottles at the overcrowded EL Sol de Puebla prison.
The body of a six-day-old baby boy was discovered with an incision in its abdomen inside of the San Miguel prison in the state of Puebla. State government officials say that the boy was discovered by an inmate who is searching for a plastic bottle in the trash.
Initial reports said the baby was three-months-old when he died, but the state government recently claimed he was only six days old.
The investigation into the incident is still on the run and state officials reportedly have yet to determine the identity of the young child or his parents.
On the Vice News report, the incident flew under the radar for several days until the president and co-founder of the nonprofit Reinserta, Saskia Ni O De Rivera, picked up on it and began investigating.
The Reinserta is a group of people who works with children and adolescents who have been exposed to traumatic situations related to violence in Mexico.
Vice reported that the not profit works specifically with children who are being raised behind bars with their incarcerated parents and also offers programs that help young offenders reintegrate into society.
De Rivera made the human drug mule allegations and said: “Everything looks like the baby entered the prison dead, the minor has an incision in the abdomen that we have not been clear about why that was done, for which it is suspected that it was used to transport drugs inside.”
De Rivera released a statement this week saying that they “strongly condemn” the state government for allowing the tragic incident to happen. She said: “The authorities are completely overwhelmed and are complicit in the acts of corruption that are happening inside the prison.”
Reinsert alleged that San Miguel prison has been taken over by inmates who now produce drugs within the prison walls and regularly bring in female sex workers to service the inmates. The group even suggested that prisoners run dog-fighting rings in the said prison.
On her appearance on Mexican network Milenio, De Rivera called the state government to act to the absurd incident asking, “How can it be that the authorities of the prison cell didn’t realize that a minor entered alive or dead and then never came out of the prison?”
The NY Post reported that the authorities are now working to determine the baby’s identity.
Miguel Barbosa Huerta, Puebla Governor said: “It is a very serious matter. A lot of filth is going to appear in (this investigation) and we are going to make it public once everything has been looked into.”
“The investigation will be handled with the secrecy necessary to uncover the truth, first determining where the child was born. Because he was not born in the prison,” he added.
The Overcrowded EL Sol de Puebla prison has a capacity of 2,100 but houses more than 3,000 inmates. The story was first reported by Spanish-language outlets Milenio and El Universal, which reported that the baby was found on January 11, 2022.
