A police officer responded to a report of a fatal shooting only to find out that the victim was her 20-year-old son.
Mississippi police officer Laquandia Cooley, 42, was working at around 2 am when she received a call about a body on Larkin Street.
Speaking to WLBT, she said: “We initially responded to the call, not knowing when I made it over there, the person was going to be my son that was laying there.”
By the time they arrived at the scene, Cooley’s 20-year-old son, Charles Stewart Jr, had already died.
“As we get out, I look and I was like, “This is my son, this is my son,’” she recalled.
“So, I literally just go into a breakdown…Like, why? Who would do this to my son?”
Cooley continued: “I couldn’t even believe what I was seeing. I was seeing my own son laying there on the ground dead. It was pretty much a panic. It was just, it was too much.”
The mother immediately called Charles’ father and told him that “someone killed our baby.”
Mr. Stewart said that his son was liked by everyone and they don’t know who kill him.
“It’s traumatizing for the whole family,” Cooley expressed. “We’re just trying to cope day to day.”
In a Facebook post, Stewart Jr.’s grieving sister wrote: “How can anybody live after losing a sibling. I’m trying to be the strong one but I’m getting weak I’ll never be able to see my brother again who ever did this is wrong why lord why.”
One person commented: “What horrible thing for her to find out. Not only that her child died but to actually be the one to find them. May he rest in peace.”
Another wrote: “So tragic–that poor woman. No parent should have to endure that.”
