An off-duty police officer from Chicago was caught on camera pinning a 14-year-old boy to the ground by kneeling on his back after he mistakenly accused him of stealing his son’s bicycle.
The shocking incident, which happened outside a Starbucks in Park Ridge on Friday, has left the family of the boy furious, saying their son was racially profiled by the cop.
The eighth-grader, identified as Josh Nieves, and his parents said that he was singled out from other children present because of his skin color.
The video starts with the cop on top of the Puerto Rican, who was at Starbucks with his friends when they spotted an abandoned bicycle on the ground.
Nieves moved the bike as it was blocking the sidewalk, leading the cop to mistakenly accuse him of stealing it even though the eighth-grader had his own bicycle next to him.
“Get off of him! Get off him,” his friends can be heard screaming as they surrounded the cop.
The police officer, who was dressed in a bright blue jacket and shorts, pinned Nieves to the ground by kneeling on his back.
The video shows the boy’s friends getting fed up with the cop, who was heard saying: “It’s my son’s bike! He stole it!”
One of Nieves’ friends shouted: “No he didn’t!”
His companions also tried to help him up by trying to make enough space between him and the cop.
One of the teens can be heard shouting: “Get away from him! You can’t do that!”
The video ends with the group walking away from the officer, with Nieves’ friends putting their arms around him to protect him from the off-duty cop as he tried to approach the boy.
The cop is now under investigation after the incident.
Nieves’ parents, Nicole and Angel Nieves, said that they are planning to file a formal complaint against the department.
