The two officers who were killed execution-style in Queensland, Australia, have been identified.
29-year-old Constable Rachel McCrow and 26-year-old Constable Matthew Arnold were among four police officers who visited a bush property in Wieambilla as part of an investigation into the missing school principal Nathaniel Train who disappeared last year.
While walking up the driveway of the property, the cops were ambushed and shot at. Though all four cops suffered injuries, Constable Randall Kirk and Constable Keely Brough managed to run for cover.
In the meanwhile, three gunmen approached wounded McCrow and Arnold and shot them up close execution-style.
The killers also started a fire in a bid to force the other two wounded cops out in the open and kill them off.
After a fire erupted in the bushland, neighbor Alan Dare came out of his home to investigate only to get shot dead by the camouflaged suspects as well.
It wasn’t until a Special Operations team arrived at the scene that the three gunmen were challenged in an intense firefight and shot dead.
While Kirk and Brough currently remain in the hospital for treatment, the police have identified the three suspects as Nathaniel Train, the missing head teacher, Gareth Train, Nathaniel’s brother, and Stacey Train, Gareth’s wife.
“In my opinion, those officers didn’t stand a chance,” Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told the reporters during a heartbreaking press conference.
“Matthew and Rachel were highly respected and much loved members of the Queensland Police Service. They were both committed and courageous young people who had a passion for policing and for serving their community.
“Both under 30 years of age. Both had wonderful careers and lives ahead of them.
“We have dedicated family liaison officers in place supporting their families. I will be visiting their families in the very near future. Tara is small station within a very tight-knit community.”
As the investigation into the ambush is ongoing, our thoughts remain with McCrow and Arnold’s families, friends, and colleagues.
