Police have started investigations after a shoe with a foot still inside it washed up on a beach.
A beachgoer reportedly found the footwear which contained a human body part while on Petone Beach in Wellington, New Zealand, on March 25, according to the Metro.
Officers conducted patrols in the area, with boats and divers seen continuing the search but no further discoveries have been reported so far.
But detective sergeant Steve Williamson said that the police are not treating it as evidence of a murder.
“Police completed a land and water search around the area the shoe was located. Nothing further was located,” he told 7News Australia, adding that his team will release more details after further investigation.
New Zealand police also told the outlet that the search continues for any items that may be relevant to inquiries in and around the area where the shoe was discovered.
Speaking to New Zealand press, a local resident said: “We bring our kids down here. You’re not sure if you’re going to find the other one.”
The owner of Artspace Gallery close to the beach, Alfred Memelink, told the New Zealand Herald that the search was extensive.
“They were going up and down, sort of like they had a good search pattern backwards and forwards along the beach. It looked like they were scanning for something.”
He added: “We usually go for a beach walk every day and for some reason, we didn’t this morning. What went through my mind was that it easily could have been us who came across it, and it would have been pretty gruesome.”
This is not the first time a shoe with a foot inside has washed up on a beach.
More than 20 human feet have reportedly washed up still in shoes since 2007 along the coast of the Salish Sea in Canada and the US.
