A dedicated trainee who aspired to become a commercial pilot died in agony after getting bitten by a mosquito.
21-year-old Oriana Pepper from Bury St Edmunds, England, was an aspiring pilot who just passed the easyJet program theory exams and looked forward to getting her instrument ratings in Belgium.
After flying to Antwerp to take the next step in becoming a pilot, the young lady got bitten on her forehead by a mosquito.
While she didn’t think much of the bite at first, Oriana was forced to visit the ER after her bite swelled up and appeared to be infected.
Following her visit to the ER on July 7, 2021, the girl was prescribed antibiotics. Just two days later, her boyfriend, James Hall, rushed her back to the hospital after her condition had worsened and she became delirious.
On July 12, Oriana passed away. Following an autopsy, it was concluded that the 21-year-old died of an “infection caused by an insect bite to the forehead.”
“An infection has entered Oriana’s skin following a bite by an insect. It’s then gone into the carotid artery of the neck and led to septic emboli in her brain,” senior coroner Nigel Parsley explained during the inquest.
“I’ve never seen a case like this before. It’s just one of those things that’s just such an unfortunate tragedy for a young lady who clearly had a wonderful career and life ahead of her.”
Paying the aspiring pilot a tribute, her parents, Louisa and Tristan, said their daughter loved nothing more than going flying.
“She had met someone she loved, she was training to be a commercial pilot and was fulfilling her dreams,” they said.
Following Oriana’s death, her parents decided to honor her memory by partnering up with British Women Pilots’ Association and starting “a small scholarship to encourage other women pilots.”
