Heavy rains and flooding have troubled Madagascar for a while now and were responsible for the car park falling down yesterday. It has been reported that the structure showed no signs of any damage before the horrifying collapse.

A lot of the houses were totally destroyed under the debris and took rescue teams almost all day to get six people out of the rubble.

Harrowing images from this most recent incident show piles of rubble where houses once stood, with rescue teams in high visibility slowly but surely making progress. The cars can be seen balanced dangerously on the pile of mud.

According to Captain Ralimbison, a spokesperson for the local fire brigade, they are still working to find another person, suspected to be still trapped inside of one of the houses.

The landslide completely folded the car park’s rubble brickwork, bringing down eight cars in total including an Audi Q7 and a Toyota Fortuner.

Colonel Tiana Razafimanahaka, head of the fire brigade, said: “The first call was recorded at our headquarters at 2 am. About 20 minutes later our men began to work on the spot.”

This disastrous news came after a number of deadly collapses and landslides across Madagascar in recent days because of the rainy season.

Madagascar’s varied fauna and flora are endangered by human activity. Since the arrival of humans around 2,350 years ago, Madagascar has lost more than 90 percent of its original forest.

Mid-2021 also marked the beginning of the 2021 Madagascar food crisis which, due to a severe drought, caused hundreds of thousands of people to face food insecurity and over one million people were on the verge of famine.

Despite its many assets, Madagascar is today one of the poorest countries in the world. It is also an island country with a wealth of unique biodiversity. Since 1952, AFD has been supporting a number of actors in the country: NGOs, local authorities, companies, and authorities, to support inclusive and sustainable development.
