Families and parents in Afghanistan are being forced into selling their organs to get the money they need to feed their children.
Amid the humanitarian crisis in the embattled nation, countless families have spoken out and revealed how they were forced to sell their kidneys for just over $1,000 per organ in order to buy food and water.
Some parents who had already sold their kidneys also revealed that they have “nothing left to sell” and that they will be forced to take further measures to make ends meet.
As one couple revealed, they sold their kidneys to feed their eight children. After running out of money, they also decided to give away one of their infants to ensure it would get fed.
“About six months ago, my three-year-old son died of hunger. I can’t see them all lose their lives… at least this way, someone else will feed them,” the 25-year-old mother expressed in an interview with Sky News.
Meanwhile, the children’s father added: “We have nothing left to sell. I can’t go to sleep every night with them crying that they are hungry.”
Another parent, a teen mom, recalled how she had no choice but to have her kidney removed and sold in order to feed her hungry babies.
“We have no choice. We do this to feed our children,” the girl said.
As hunger across the impoverished nation continues, one elder from a village where dozens of parents sacrificed their kidneys to keep their children fed called on the world for help.
“I urge the world, please don’t leave us alone. Stop this tragedy of people selling part of their bodies. Afghanistan needs help,” the man said.
