Olympic sprinter Deon Lendore died in a tragic car accident while on his way home from practice.
The 29-year-old athlete who secured a bronze medal for Trinidad & Tobago and participated in the Olympics on three occasions was reportedly involved in a deadly car crash in Texas on Monday.
According to the reports, the former NCAA champion and Texas A&M star collided with another vehicle after his car drifted off its path and slammed into the SUV while he was driving home from practice.
As the Texas Department of Public Safety has since confirmed, the young man died on the scene. The elderly woman who was in the SUV that Lendore collided with was rushed to the hospital after the crash.
After the sprinter’s sudden death, Shamfa Cudjoe of the Trinidad Ministry of Sport and Community Development paid a tribute to the 29-year-old and thanked him for what he has done for his country.
“He epitomized hope and joy each time his feet landed on the track,” the minister said.
“He was indeed a trailblazer, a life gone too soon. We thank him for everything he has done and for giving distinguished and diligent service to TT.”
Meanwhile, the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic team shared their grief in the following statement: “Words cannot adequately express our sadness at the devastating and untimely loss of 3x Olympian and Olympic and World Championship bronze medalist Deon Lendore who has been an inspiration and motivation to us all both on an off the track.”
Paying a tribute to Lendore was also coach Pat Henry who worked alongside Lendore while the athlete was volunteering as an assistant at Texas A&M.
“I can’t even express this loss. Over the years our relationship had changed to not only one of my athletes to coach, but he was loved by my wife, children and grandchildren. He was part of my family. It hurts, it really hurts,” Henry expressed.
The deadly car crash remains under investigation.
