An Illinois police officer was “desperately pleading for her life” in the moments before she was shot dead, it has emerged.
On Wednesday, Bradley police officer, 49-year-old Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic, was disarmed and shot dead while responding to a report of barking dogs together with her partner, 27-year-old Officer Tyler Bailey.
Following the shooting, the police arrested Darius Sullivan, 25, and Xandria Harris, 26, and charged the pair with first-degree murder.
It has now been revealed that the woman had begged for her life after being disarmed and moments before she was fatally shot by Sullivan who received help from Harris.
“At the time Sullivan fired the fatal shots into Sgt. Rittmanic, Sgt. Rittmanic was pleading with them to just leave, ‘you don’t have to do this, please just go, please don’t please don’t.’ She was desperately pleading for her life,” Jim Rowe, Kankakee County State’s Attorney, revealed.
Rowe added that he will call on the attorney general to review the existing first-degree murder charges and consider federal murder charges, which come along with a potential death sentence, instead.
“I will be submitting an official request to the US Attorney General for the Central District of Illinois and to the U.point 249 |
S.point 2 | Attorney General to review the first degree murder case pending against Darius Sullivan and Xandria Harris for federal murder charges, and pursue a federal sentence of death against both defendants,” the attorney said according to court documents.point 215 | 1
Rittmanic and Bailey were responding to a report of barking dogs at a motel when they ran the plates of an unattended vehicle only to find out that it belonged to Sullivan whose warrant for arrest was active.
After knocking on the door of the room where Sullivan and Harris were staying, the two officers waited for around 15 minutes before Harris emerged and closed the door behind her, refusing to let the cops get to Sullivan.
Amid the quarrel, Sullivan emerged from the room and shot Bailey in the head. He also shot Rittmanic once as the veteran cop attempted to run for cover.
After his gun got jammed, Sullivan charged towards Sullivan, who was struggling on the floor, and disarmed her with the help of Harris. The 25-year-old then shot the female cop with her own weapon.
