A 37-year-old nurse who was charged with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter faces 90 years in prison.
Nicole L. Linton, an ICU nurse who works in LA, was charged over the fatal crash that killed pregnant mother Asherey Ryan, 23, her unborn baby, her 1-year-old son Alonzo Lunchiano Quintero, the father of the unborn child, and three others.
According to reports, Linton was driving 100mph when she crashed her car into five vehicles.
During a press conference on Monday, LA County DA George Gascon said that there was no evidence the nurse was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
She is now being held at the Century Regional Detention Center in California with a bond set at $9 million.
Asherey Ryan, who was eight months pregnant, was pronounced dead at the scene alongside her 1-year-old son Alonzo and her unborn child following the crash.
The unborn baby’s father, Renald, also died after the vehicle split in half due to the impact.
Gascon also said on Monday: “A young family was destroyed in the blink of an eye. There’s catastrophic damage to the families and friends of those killed and injured.
“It’s not only a tremendous loss to their families, but to our entire community, who learned of this incredible tragedy who watched the now viral video of the collision.”
Witness Tabia Johnson took a photo of the nurse sitting on a sidewalk after the crash. She also condemned her driving, saying Linton appeared to have suffered only minor injuries.
Linton’s friend previously told reporters that the nurse was ‘fighting with her boyfriend’ before the incident.
The fatal crash occurred between Slauson Avenue and South La Brea Avenue on Thursday around 1:40 pm.
Eight people were left with severe injuries. Of those, six were teenagers.
