A young nurse killed her daughter and then took her own life using drugs stolen from her hospital after being suspended from her job.
Shiwangi Bagoan, who was working as an anesthetist’s assistant at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was found dead alongside her 2-year-old daughter Ziana in December 2020.
The bodies of the two were discovered by the little girl’s grandmother, Jassumatu Lalu, in their family home.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but could not save their lives.
Jasssumati reportedly called at the home after being concerned for her daughter and granddaughter’s welfare.
In the suicide letter addressed to her mother, Shiwangi apologized for putting her mom through ‘a lot,’ adding she was taking Ziana with her “because I don’t want to be selfish in leaving her to you.”
An investigation into their deaths found that Shiwangi went to the hospital in the middle of the night and stole some drugs, which were found to be the cause of her death.
Detective Sergeant Terry Goodman, the lead officer investigating the case, said: “Enquiries found that vials of drugs were stolen from West Moreland Street Hospital, from a locked cabinet Shiwangi had 24-hour access to.”
After speaking to a number of witnesses during the investigation, including Shiwangi’s partner, Joseph, and Ziana’s biological father, Jijesh, it was found that the mother had previously attempted suicide.
Messages between her and her partner revealed that she had been “struggling to get through the day.”
One text said: “You know I’m stressing out, at least just be here with me.”
Another read: I’m really struggling to cope. I’ve been telling you that I’ve been having all these hopeless thoughts and you haven’t taken any note of that.”
Two days before their tragic deaths, Shiwangi sent another message to her partner: “Please come home today. I am barely hanging on.”
The cause of death for both Shiwangi and Ziana was ‘respiratory failure to drug intoxication.’
“It is heart-breaking for you to have lost not one, but two, family members, in such difficult circumstances,” West London’s acting senior coroner Lydia Brown said.
“I am sure that these losses have been felt so very widely by all those that knew Shiwangi and Ziana.”
