Ukraine has called for international sanctions against Russia after accusing the invading country of launching a missile attack on its biggest nuclear power plant.
On Friday, several Russian missiles reportedly struck the plant in Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine, adding to the insecurity in Ukraine and the rest of Europe.
Now, Ukrainian officials claimed that Moscow has once again targeted the power plant in a missile strike as they insisted the risk of a “nuclear disaster” is “very real.”
Accusing Russia of threatening the world with “nuclear terror” was Enerhoatom, Ukraine’s state power company that oversees the operations at the Zaporizhzhia plant.
“Russian occupiers once again fired rockets at the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the town of Enerhodar,” they said.
Enerhoatom further claimed that three radiation sensors were damaged in the recent missile attack on the facility.
“Consequently, timely detection and response in the event of a deterioration in the radiation situation or leakage of radiation from containers of spent nuclear fuel are not yet possible,” the authority said as it confirmed that the plant’s dry storage facility – which houses spent nuclear fuel tanks – was attacked.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s strongman President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately called for the Russian nuclear industry to face sanctions over the alleged attacks on Friday and over the weekend.
“Russian nuclear terror requires a stronger response from the international community – sanctions on the Russian nuclear industry and nuclear fuel,” he urged.
