Pittsburgh Steelers have come under fire after performing mock CPR on their player just days after Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.
Hamlin, a 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety, suddenly dropped to the ground during a match against Cincinnati Bengals last Monday. Following his collapse, Hamlin was hospitalized in critical condition, whereas his family revealed he had to be resuscitated twice after his heart went out.
Days later, on Saturday, Pittsburgh Steelers were seconds away from beating Cleveland Browns when linebacker Alex Highsmith challenged Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson before lying down on his back and being given mock CPR by a teammate.
While it remains unclear who performed mock CPR, Highsmith got on his feet after just a few chest compressions.
The stunt, which took place just 39 seconds before the game ended, wasn’t received well by NFL fans who have been praying for Hamlin to recover from his mysterious injury for a week.
“I’ve lost all respect for that team. If Mike Tomlin [coach] doesn’t address that despicable act, he’ll lose my respect too,” one viewer expressed.
“Not a good look Steelers, not even close! Unprofessional and disgusting,” another raged.
A third said: “Nice to see the Steelers paying tribute and showing love to Hamlin by doing a CPR celebration on that sack.”
The news comes days after four Steelers joined arms to show support for Hamlin by delivering free toys to the children’s daycare center where his mother works.
The kind gesture was carried out by Cameron Sutton, Terrell Edmunds, Levi Wallace, and Tre Norwood.
