However, the accused baby killer ‘got rid’ of the concerned mother by saying ‘trust me I’m a nurse.’

When the baby’s mother arrived, the newborn was ‘distressed’ and bleeding from the mouth. The next day, he died at Countess of Chester Hospital.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC said the child was killed by an injection of air into his bloodstream.

“We say that she interrupted Lucy Letby who was attacking Child E, although she did not realize it at the time,” the prosecutor said.

It was on August 5, 2015, around 9 pm when the mother visited him at the neonatal unit where he was being looked after by the nurse along with baby F.

Jurors also heard how Letby showed a ‘very unusual interest’ in the child’s family after the tragedy.

The baby’s grieving mother recalled how she was told by the nurse that a registrar would review her son’s condition and that she should leave the room.

“’Trust me I’m a nurse.’ That’s what she told (the mother,” Mr. Johnson said. “We suggest she was fobbed off by Lucy Letby.”

Child E reportedly suffered significant blood loss, with one doctor saying he had never seen such a large bleed in a newborn.

After his death, the Crown said Letby made ‘fraudulent’ nursing notes which were ‘false, misleading and designed to cover her tracks.’
