The mother of an 18-year-old girl who was arrested and charged with attempted murder after she tossed her newborn baby in a dumpster has defended her daughter.
Alexis Avila, 18, was caught on surveillance camera throwing her child in a dumpster behind a shopping mall in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Her mother, 47-year-old Martha, has spoken out and defended her daughter, telling Daily Mail: “Everybody makes mistakes.”
“People can talk and give their opinion. Everybody makes mistakes. People can preach all they want, they can judge all they want but we only care about the judgment of one,” the grandmother said.
“Yeah, it has been a shock.”
Martha also told the news outlet that she was not sure if their family would be given custody of the child.
The baby boy, who has been named Saul by his father, 16, is now recovering at a hospital in Texas and is being watched over by the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.
The 16-year-old boy’s uncle told Daily Mail that Saul is likely to be taken in by his grandfather, 50.
“(His dad) isn’t the type to give up on a family member. He won’t let that baby be without a home. It’s been a big shock for us all. We only found out about the baby last night,” he said.
Avila’s friends said that the teen had been vocal about her pregnancy. She stopped going to class before the Christmas break.
However, Avila and her mother told police that they were not aware of her pregnancy, with Avila telling the police that she panicked after giving birth at her parents’ house before tossing the newborn in the dumpster.
April Meadow, Michael Green, and Hector Jesso found the child and said they had initially thought that it was a cat.
Avila was arrested the next day and she confessed to throwing away her newborn baby.
