The heartbreaking last words of a five-year-old girl who was strangled by her mother have been revealed.
Alijah Thomas, 5, was strangled to death by her own mother, Martina Madarova, while watching cartoons at her home in Ealing, England.
According to the investigators, the mother turned on the TV and played cartoons before strangling her young child and swaddling her in a blanket.
Moments before drawing her last breath, the girl allegedly begged her mom not to kill her. “Mummy, don’t kill me,” she allegedly said while struggling to breathe.
Madarova responded by saying: “I don’t want to kill you, I just want to help you, no baby you’re safe.”
Alijah then said: “No mummy, you’re killing me.”
Following the incident, emergency services arrived at the scene but failed to resuscitate the young girl. Meanwhile, the police arrested the mother who appeared to regret her actions as she said: “My daughter, what have I done? My daughter, her life, I took her life. She was the most beautiful thing.”
The authorities have since confirmed that Madarova had been suffering from mental health issues which grew bigger and bigger during the lockdown.
On the night of the murder, she allegedly resorted to drinking wine and finished two bottles before strangling her daughter.
“The week before Alijah’s death I took four days off to help sort out the school place and to calm Martina down as she was not herself,” the girl’s father, David Thomas, said in a statement read in the court by Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson.
“It was clear she was not herself. I was asking her to get herself checked into the GP as she seemed depressed.
“She was putting a lot of pressure on herself. During our discussions about things she would start crying and just walk off into another room.”
After praising his daughter and speculating what she could have become if her life was not cut short, Thomas appeared to pity the girl’s mother by saying she would never have hurt her daughter if not for her mental health illness.
“She is the most innocent person you could meet. She sees the good in everyone and everything. I am very shocked by what has happened as this is just not her,” he said.
“Martina would do anything for me or Alijah. She did not like violence and would not allow Alijah to watch cartoons which had an element of violence in them.”
Following her arrest, Madarova was charged with murder. She later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison.
