A couple was found guilty of false imprisonment after it was revealed that they had kept their son with autism captive in a dirty attic room.
22-year-old Matthew Langley weighed just 85 pounds when he was found locked up in a small attic room where he was kept captive by his mother, Lorna Hewitt, and his stepfather, Craig Hewitt.
According to the reports, the young man was kept in poor conditions and his room in Sheffield, England, was filled with trash, feces, and vomit.
As the authorities have revealed, Matthew was kept locked in a room that was described as “deeply disturbing” by the National Autistic Society.
Speaking of the ordeal the young man was forced to go through, prosecutor Nicholas Campbell revealed how the 22-year-old arrived at the ICU in a “pitiable state” and how bruises on his limbs indicate that he had to move around on all fours due to being severely dehydrated and malnourished.
“His sodium levels were dangerously high. They measured 180. They were so high they could shut down his brain and kill him. Anything above 145, there is a real chance of death,” Campbell said.
“The Home Office pathologist examined the injuries and said the abrasions and bruises were consistent in his view with Matthew having been crawling on all fours over objects in his path.”
Following their arrest, Lorna and Craig were found guilty of false imprisonment and causing a vulnerable adult to suffer serious physical harm.
The mother and the stepfather are facing prison time as they await their sentencing.
