A mother and her one-year-old son tragically died in a house fire after she saved her two other children and she ran back inside to get her baby.
31-year-old Giovanna Cabrera and her children were inside their home at 218 Heaney Street when the blaze suddenly broke out.
After saving her two older children, aged 6 and 9, the mother rushed inside the burning building to save Gabriel but they never made it out.
Firefighters said that the fire was so intense they had to wait before they could enter.
Giovanna’s grieving sister, Giselle Bueno, said to ABC13 News: “She had him in her arms like the baby, so I know she tried. I know if she could’ve, she would have made it out.”
It is not clear what caused the fire and the incident is still being investigated.
According to reports, the house was severely damaged that firefighters could not determine whether it was one or two stories.
After the tragedy, Houseton Fire Chief Samuel Pena took to X, formerly Twitter, and shared the news. “Heartbreaking incident,” he wrote.
The devastated sister, Giselle Bueno, broke down in tears outside the structure that was covered on ash. “I can’t believe I am not going to see her anymore and the baby,” she expressed.
“She had to save her babies that is her first thing. I couldn’t imagine how scared she was.”
A memorial with a picture of the mother and her son were placed next to a tree outside the home.
Bethel Baptist Church Pastor Jaime Garcia and some church members arrived at the scene to support the grieving family.
“The church is here, family and friends, and that is for one reason to encourage this family during this very tragic time in their life that none of us can understand,” Garcia said.
