A mother has passed away and her 5-year-old son is still in critical condition after they fell 90ft from Niagara Falls.
According to NBC News, police believe that it was the woman who intentionally made the jump.
The mother and her child fell 90 feet into the Niagara Gorge near the Cave of the Winds complex on Monday, said New York State Parks Police Captain Chris Rola.
He said during the press conference: “Unfortunately, the female did not make it. She was recovered by the New York State Police aviation unit and is being taken by the Niagara County Coroner.”
It was also revealed that the mother and her son underwent “life-saving measures.’
The child was reportedly in stable condition and was rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery.
Rola also revealed that the mother and her son were with her husband before the fatal jump.
Police were speaking with the husband and other parkgoers who were in the area at the time of the fall.
When asked if the woman jumped or fell, Rola said: “The investigation is still ongoing at this time, but we don’t believe it was an accident.
“Although today it’s nice out, it’s very icy down there. It’s a real tough terrain that our guy and our girls were able to get through and get to them and provide that life-saving care and do everything they could.
“We were going to make every effort for that child that was still alive at the time.”
Rola also said that Niagara Falls is a ‘dangerous icy terrain’ to perform rescues, adding that they have a swift water rescue team that train all the time.
Niagara County Crisis Services is now assisting the family.
