A grieving mother has issued a warning after her young son died suddenly while playing in a beer garden.
7-year-old Harvey Tyrrell from London, England, was electrocuted to death at King Harold pub in Harold Wood back in 2018 after touching a metal railing with a defective garden light connected to it.
Following the incident at the pub’s beer garden, the business’s landlord, David Bearman, and electrician Colin Naylor were jailed for their role in the boy’s death.
Now, more than a year after the pair were jailed for the accidental death of Harvey, the 7-year-old’s mom Danielle Jones called on all hospitality establishments to ensure that their electrical equipment is safe for customers.
“People who run pubs and other hospitality venues should regularly check their electrics, especially as pub beer gardens are getting busier at this time of the year,” the mom says as her son’s 5th death anniversary approaches.
“I’m still hearing of other incidents involving unsafe electrics in pubs and this needs to stop – I don’t want any other family to go through what happened to us.
“Harvey was such a beautiful little soul, a cheeky chappie and one of a kind and what sadly happened to him could have been prevented.”
Urging business owners to ensure a safe environment for all visitors was also Mark Dawson of the Health and Safety Executive who said:
“The hospitality sector will be looking forward to a busy summer period. Those responsible for outdoor spaces need to make sure electrical equipment is in good condition, safe to use and regularly checked.”
