A young mother who attempted to murder her newborn baby by tossing him into a dumpster has been freed after posting a $10,000 unsecured bond.
18-year-old Alexis Avila from New Mexico was charged with child abuse and attempted murder after she was caught on video throwing her son into a dumpster.
Her baby was found clinging to life six hours after being thrown in the garbage.
Less than two hours after the arrest, Avila was released after posting a $10,000 unsecured bond. She is set to be arraigned at Lea County District Court.
The acting chief of Hobbs police department, August Fonds, said he had never encountered a case like this before.
“If you are struggling with a new infant, the best response is to find somebody who can help you with that,” he said. “Contact us, and let us help you through the situation.”
Surveillance footage showed Avila tossing a black trash bag into the dumpster in Hobs, New Mexico. The incident occurred at around 2 pm on January 7.
Nearly six hours later, the video showed three people searching through the dumpster before they found the baby boy inside. Fortunately, the child was alive and the umbilical cord was still attached.
In a criminal complaint obtained by KRQE, the 18-year-old confessed to throwing away her newborn son.
According to reports, she told police that she didn’t know that she was pregnant until she experienced stomach pain and visited a doctor. The next day, she gave birth to her child at her parents’ home.
After delivering her son, she wrapped him in a towel and put him in a plastic bag before throwing him in the dumpster.
The newborn, who was rescued by April Meadow, Michael Green, and Hector Jesso, is now in a stable condition at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
