A 22-year-old mother from Louisiana has been charged with murder after she reportedly left her 6-month-old baby in a hot car for five hours.
The incident happened three years after she did the same thing to her other child, who managed to survive and was taken away from her.
Ivy Lynn from Lake Charles left baby Rissa in the hot vehicle while she was at work.
Officers started ‘life-saving’ measures on the baby before rushing her to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
When being interviewed by investigators, the mother-of-two told different stories, initially saying that her baby was not in her care before admitting that she had left Rissa in the car.
Speaking to WAFB, Calcasieu Parish Chief Deputy Gary Stitch Guillory said: “She knew that baby was in the car and she chose to go to work for an entire shift. There is no excuse.”
“She claims she left the car running at first, but then a coworker told her that her car was running outside, and she didn’t realize it and went out there and just turned the car off,” the chief deputy added.
Officers also said that they found suspected marijuana in the car. They believe that Lee ‘intentionally’ left her baby in the vehicle.
The mother was charged with second-degree murder and possession of marijuana. She was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center with a bond set at $1.2 million.
Police have confirmed that Lee had previously left her other child Avereigh, now 3, in a hot car in 2019.
The young girl is now in custody of a family member, the Department of Children and Family Services said.
The young mother ‘voluntarily’ gave up the baby ‘before the state had to get involved,’ Guillory added.
