The grieving mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims has spoken out and said that Halloween costumes, which include wigs, drills and glasses of the Milwaukee serial killer are insensitive to the loved ones of the victims.
85-year-old Shirley Hughes, the mother of Tony Hughes – Dahmer’s 12th victim – has slammed the Netflix show ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ for misrepresenting the circumstances around the tragic death of her deaf son.
Hughes has told media outlets that it pains her to see people profit from the death of her son and she can’t believe the show was made.
Hughes was the mother of aspiring model Tony Hughes, who was killed by Dahmer after they met at a bar in 1991.
“I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there,” she told the Guardian.
The mother also challenged the accuracy of the new Netflix show, saying: “It didn’t happen like that.”
Speaking to TMZ, she said that it was hard to see the series but knowing that many people want to dress like the killer is like rubbing salt into the wound.
Many online stores like eBay are now selling vintage gold-framed sunglasses, blonde wigs, and even vintage drills.
Hughes told TMZ that she believed their family should also see some of the profits generated by the death of her son.
It 1992, a judge awarded seven of the victim’s families $70 million to acknowledge the severity of the crimes.
But because Dahmer was in prison there was no money for him to pay. It was speculated that the penalties could be paid for with money generated by a future film or book.
