A mother killed her husband, their 13-year-old son, as well as her 74-year-old dad before she took her own life with a gun as police officers arrived to evict them from their home.
Theresa Cain from Ohio also shot her daughter Samantha, 20, at their home on February 27.
Samantha survived but is still in critical condition.
The incident occurred when cops from Clermont County Sheriff’s Office arrived to serve eviction papers.
According to reports, Cain and their $299,000 home had gone into foreclosure and was already acquired for $230,000.
Cain greeted the deputies on the patio before running back inside their home. That’s when the officers heard muffled cries ‘No, no, no, no,’ before gunshots rang out.
The victims have since been identified as her husband Steven Cain, 50, their son Ethan Kain, 13, and Theresa’s father William Felton, 74.
Sheriff Steve Leahy said the mother was standing on the patio when officers arrived. They reportedly spoke with her days before to talk about the eviction.
She requested a few hours so they could pack up but she immediately ran inside the house. When the deputies knocked on the door, they did not receive any response but heard muffled cries.
The officers said that the muffled ‘No, no, no, no,’ was followed by a ‘very fast’ succession of gunshots.
Cain shot three members of the family dead before she turned the weapon on herself.
The sheriff said: “You would think there would be resources for someone like them but I think she kept this a very close secret. Hopefully, Samantha recovers and can help fill in some blanks.
“It is tragic and unnecessary. What can we do to keep this from happening again?’ Well, I’m just not that sure that we can.
“When people are in crisis, it’s not as easy as just reaching out and saying, “I need help.” They are spiraling. Nothing makes sense.”
“What we see here,” the sheriff continued, “you can’t make sense of this. Murder is a senseless thing but then you throw in suicide and the homicide of your family. It’s all very sad. This lady had been totally cooperative the entire time.”
