The 38-year-old mother and 64-year-old grandmother of a 9-year-old girl in Arizona have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after the child tragically died from a severe lice infestation.
Sandra Kraykovich and Elizabeth Kraykovich were arrested after emergency personnel found the unresponsive girl with “a large amount of bugs on her face,” according to court documents.
“Upon closer inspection it was discovered that there was an enormous amount of lice in her hair,” emergency personnel said to investigators.
Officers said that text messages prove the young girl’s mother, Sandra, was aware she was sick but did not seek medical care.
Sandra told police that her daughter suffered from headaches, fever, vomiting, and had anemia. The 9-year-old also had difficulty keeping balance.
One of her children told investigators that her mother had tried to treat her sister’s lice with mouthwash.
Text messages revealed that Sandra was aware of her daughter’s condition. On March 21, police said the mother textedher boyfriend, writing: “OMG babe. Listen I’m in my room and my mom called me. (redacted) was asking if I could check on her to make sure she isn’t dying.”
Sandra’s boyfriend told her to take the girl to the hospital but the mother refused.
The 9-year-old girl’s grandmother, who was also aware of her poor condition, texted Sandra and said that her granddaughter “can’t go to the ER with her hair but that’s left to me because you not home.”
An autopsy revealed that the girl died from anemia connected to the severe lice infestation. Malnutrition also contributed to her tragic death.
It was later determined that the cause of death was neglect.
An affidavit said that if the mother had “sought medical care, (her daughter) would probably still be alive.”
