On their first evening in Khao Lak, the woman reportedly tumbled to the ground and hit her head against a hard surface after a wrong step made her fall from a two-foot balcony.

In the process, Kylee suffered a severe brain injury that landed her in the ER.

The 48-year-old has since been flown back to Australia via a Thai Airways flight and she currently remains at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

“The biggest improvement she’s had is her breathing tube has been taken out. [She also] doesn’t have a deep brain injury,” Paul said as he set up a GoFundMe page to help the family raise money for Kylee’s medical expenses.

“It’s all around the outer edge. We took that as a good sign, but I’m no doctor.”

The devastated husband also explained that their travel insurance company wouldn’t cover their medical expenses because they were drinking alcohol prior to the accident.

According to the reports, Kylee underwent emergency brain surgery shortly after her fall in Thailand. After the operation, the family had to wait until the mother was stable enough before they could fly her back to Australia.

“She’s got no skull on one side of her head, so one small movement the wrong way and we could be right back where we started the first time,” Paul told 7news.

“You can see the pain in her eyes, you can see the frustration.”

Paul also suggested the low-height, deck-like balcony was to blame for the fall because it had no steps on the side.

“However there were no steps, and as she stepped off the deck her body dropped into nothingness, with the full momentum of her body sending her face first into the pavement below,” he explained as footage showing the fall emerged.

Speaking of his wife’s recovery, he added: “We still have a long way to go, one day at a time … she will need more surgery in three to four months.”
