44-year-old Rebecca Downes from Blackpool, England, died in a massive fire that was caused by an e-scooter battery at her home.

In an attempt to flee the burning house, the mother jumped from a third-floor window only to suffer critical injuries upon landing on the ground below.

“The battery was by the door and we couldn’t get out. The battery kept exploding and I could see bright flashing and bits of battery were hitting me. It was like a Roman candle,” Rebecca’s partner, Patrick Ramsey, said in a witness statement.

According to the reports, there were no other fatalities in the fire though both Ramsey and one of the couple’s daughters also suffered injuries.

Ramsey, who owned a bike repair shop, also told the inquest that something went wrong with the battery that he collected from his friend just days before the tragedy.

This was confirmed by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service who said battery failure was responsible for the blaze.

An incident intelligence officer also explained that battery fires are much more dangerous than conventional ones because they can spread faster and are harder to put out and escape from.

Contributing to the incident was also the fact that Rebecca and Patrick were in their third-floor bedroom with one of their daughters when the fire started.
