A mother and her two sons died from hypothermia after falling asleep in an overgrown park.
35-year-old Monica Cannady from Michigan was found dead alongside two of her three children, boys aged 3 and 9, after falling asleep in a park near Detroit.
According to the reports, the mother was suffering from a “mental health crisis” when she told her children they needed to seek refuge in a park near Crystal Lake in Pontiac.
After the family fell asleep, Monica’s 10-year-old daughter woke up and asked the neighbors for help after realizing that her brothers and her mother were all dead.
Though the little girl suffered hypothermia, she is currently in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
As Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard has since revealed, the mother-of-three became paranoid in recent weeks.
While the sheriff’s office allegedly offered to help her with her mental health struggles, the woman refused and ran away from home with her kids.
The police also revealed that the family probably spent several days out in the cold before succumbing to the freezing temperatures.
“We’re seeing death everyday as a result of the mental health crisis and it sure would be nice if Washington and Lansing tuned in on that,” Bouchard said during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Cannady’s family launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral expenses while providing some funds for the 10-year-old girl who lost her family.
“Hello family, friends and new friends. Our beloved niece, daughter, cousin and granddaughter Monica Cannady and two of her three children Kyle (9) and Malik (3) were found deceased. Her 10-year-old daughter Lilly is now left without her Mother or brothers,” the page reads.
“Monica was a loving, caring mother to her children, always a hard worker making sure her children were well taken care of.
“Monica did not have insurance for herself or her children. Any amount you can give will greatly be appreciated.”
