The mother of a young boy who died while cutting class has lashed out at her son’s school and accused them of negligence.
13-year-old Daniel Persaud and Ryan Wong died shortly after getting caught in a rip tide while surfing at Jamaica Bay in New York City.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday at around 11.40 am when the two boys were supposed to be in school.
Daniel’s mother, Samantha Singh, has since lashed out at her son’s school, the Middle School 137 in Queens, and accused them of not informing her that her son had been missing from class for several hours.
“They did not call me to let me know he was not in class until hours later. They need to inform the parents right away, especially a middle school,” Singh said in an interview with The New York Post as she revealed the school told her her son had been missing since 10 am.
“We didn’t receive a call until 7 pm. So, if we could have received a call earlier, I have a track on his phone.”
As the grieving mom suggested, she would be able to track down her son and possibly prevent his death if the school informed her that he was not in class in time.
It has since come to light that Daniel, Ryan, and three other friends decided to skip school on Friday to celebrate the beginning of summer at Jamaica Bay.
“I have four kids. In this day and age, you have to know where they are all the time. I thought he was in school. Just a couple of hours, I didn’t track him,” Singh added.
“The school where my two oldest daughters went, Richmond Hill, they would have called if any of my daughters left school. Right away!”
Meanwhile, Daniel’s uncle, Jerry, spoke to Daily News and claimed the entire family is shocked and devastated because the 13-year-old wasn’t known to ever skip school.
“It’s just shocking because he doesn’t go out much. But he suddenly went out and this happened. It would be just school and home for him,” he said. “Everyone is in shock now. The family is devastated.”
Our thoughts are with Ryan and Daniel’s families during these challenging times.
