At least 50 people have been killed after protesters were seen storming the streets of Iran to protest against the country’s strictly enforced dress code.
According to local media outlets, the incident took place when a young woman was killed for refusing to wear her head scarf or hijab. And on that note, she was arrested by the police and killed in their violent custody.
The news spread like wildfire around the globe and many couldn’t believe what they were reading and how a young and bright female was brutally tortured to death on an issue like this.
Therefore, protesters began taking to the streets to fight for justice and their rights. They want the world to know that it’s not okay and that they were no longer going to live in oppression.
Mahsa Amini was 22 when she was arrested for saying no to the country’s hijab rule. In Iran, it’s an obligation for women to cover their heads and the rule has been a part of history since 1979.
What is appalling is how the religious police claimed her scarf was fitted on ‘too loosely’ and for that matter, she would be arrested.
While the country’s police say Amini passed away from a heart attack, her family knows that’s not the truth.
They believe she was tortured by the cops in their custody, collapsing after they detained her. She spent a total of three days in a coma in Tehran and then died after that.
Ever since then, thousands of women are taking to the streets, cutting off their own hair, and then burning their headscarves as retaliation for what the police did with the young victim.
Videos are making their way onto social media and they’re showing hundreds taking to the streets amid fiery clashes and protests. Some clips show the angry mobs setting police vehicles on fire while confronting the officers directly.
