An angry mom went viral after blasting Oregon’s ‘woke’ state law that calls for menstrual products to be provided in boys’ school bathrooms.
Oregon Department of Education’s Menstrual Dignity Act has come under scrutiny as it entered a 2-week discussion period before going into effect following the summer vacation.
As per the new state-wide law, public schools and colleges will be forced to provide menstrual products free of charge in all bathrooms including bathrooms exclusively used by boys as young as 5 years old.
While the law aims to boost inclusivity by providing transgender students – or those questioning their gender – with free menstrual products, some parents argued that only girls’ bathrooms should feature free tampons and that money used on tampons for boys could be spent on more important stuff.
As Oregon Legislative Revenue Office previously announced, some $5.6 million from the State School Fund would be dedicated to implementing the changes associated with the law in the following two years.
Triggering the two-week discussion period was an Oregon mother and Eagle Point School District member Cherylene Stritenberg who filed a petition requesting the department to roll back the menstrual act.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to making these products available, but requiring we divert funds from our State School Funds to ensure they are included specifically in boys’ bathrooms is a misuse of those funds,” she said as she hinted money would be better spent on school supplies and textbooks.
“My hope is that we can re-evaluate and come to a better solution that is financially responsible and beneficial to those who need it.”
The Menstrual Dignity Act was introduced by Rep. Ricki Ruiz and received lots of support in the Oregon House of Representatives.
While many people agree that providing menstrual products to young students free of charge is an excellent idea that will help many girls by normalizing period and guaranteeing access to menstrual products, critics blasted the part that says such products also have to be provided in boys’ bathrooms.
“As we know, there’s a lot of our youth who don’t identify as female or male, or are transitioning genders,” Ruiz, a Democratic representative, said as he defended the law.
“We wanted to respect that and make sure we provide these resources in all restrooms for folks who may be struggling to transition to a different restroom.”
