A missing woman was found alive and well 400 feet above solid ground after falling off a cliff.
64-year-old Gayle Stewart from Nevada was reported missing on Valentine’s Day after falling off a cliff in the outskirts of Reno in the morning hours.
Fortunately, Stewart managed to land on a tree where she remained for several hours before she was found by her son’s friend.
After the young man spotted the woman clinging to a tree with no way of escape, a rescue mission was launched and first responders rushed to the scene to get to the senior before it was too late.
Using ropes, dozens of rescuers managed to get to the woman, who was dangling off the tree some 400 feet above the ground, and haul her to safety.
“It’s actually kind of a miracle story. The son called up some friends to start searching for her and one of the boys just decided to head off this cliff thinking maybe she fell down there and found her clinging to a tree,” Seth Williams of the Reno Fire Department said in an interview with KOLO-TV.
“He said the last thing she said was ‘help’ and then didn’t talk anymore.”
It has since the dramatic mission come to light that some thirty people participated in the rescue. Stewart was lifted to safety some twelve hours after falling off the cliff and landing on a tree beneath.
“That’s what I told the young man that found her, I said that’s truly a lifesaver,” Williams added.
“With the rain and the snow coming tonight she’s already been exposed for the better part of 12 hours. It could have been a very different outcome had he not found her when he did.”
