At least 15 people were killed and dozens were left trapped under the rubble following a Russian missile strike in Ukraine.
On Sunday, a Russian missile struck an occupied apartment building in Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian town that lies in the embattled Donetsk region, and resulted in the death of at least 15 civilians.
According to the local authorities, the blast destroyed a large portion of the building, leaving at least thirty people trapped under the debris.
“The rescue operation is underway. Rescuers were able to bring out six dead and five injured,” Pavlo Kyrylenko, the regional governor of Donetsk, announced on Telegram.
“At least 30 others are under the rubble. The building was partially destroyed, and rescuers with a mechanical digger were clearing the area.”
Kyrylenko went on to add that the rescuers were already able to reach several people trapped in the wreckage.
“During the rescue operation, 15 bodies were found at the scene and five people were pulled out of the rubble,” Ukrainian emergency services confirmed.
The missile strike on a civilian building comes amid heavy conflict between Ukraine and Russia in the east of the embattled nation that came under Putin’s invasion earlier this year.
According to Governor Kyrylenko, nearly 600 civilians in the disputed region were killed by Russian forces since the beginning of the invasion on February 24.
Meanwhile, a United Nations report suggests that nearly five thousand civilians across the country were killed by invading Russian forces as of June 26. An additional 12 million people are believed to have been displaced as a result of the war.
