A female minister has come under fire after telling men to “gently” beat their wives when they refuse to obey them.
Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff is a Malaysian politician and a Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development who managed to spark outrage by normalizing violence against women.
In her short clip dubbed ‘Mother’s Tips’, the minister suggested it was okay for men to beat their wives if they refuse to change their behavior or listen to them.
As Yusoff argued, men should first try to speak to their wives to address their “stubbornness.” If that doesn’t work, however, she advises them to discipline their wives by sleeping apart from them or even beating them into submission.
“However, if the wife still refuses to take the advice, or change her behavior after the sleeping separation, then the husbands can try the physical touch approach, by striking her gently, to show his strictness and how much he wants her to change,” the deputy minister said.
Meanwhile, the MP of the Malaysian Islamic Party also shared a piece of advice for fellow women as she told them not to talk back to their husbands without permission.
“Speak to your husbands when they are calm, finished eating, have prayed and are relaxed. When we want to speak, ask for permission first,” Siti Zailah said.
Following her bizarre clip, the deputy minister was quickly slammed by the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality whose members accused the politician of “normalizing domestic violence.”
“The deputy minister must step down for normalizing domestic violence, which is a crime in Malaysia, as well as for perpetuating ideas and behaviors that are opposed to gender equality,” the group’s statement read.
