McDonald’s was forced to remove an “offensive” billboard that was erected next to a sign for a local crematorium.
The fast-food chain has come under fire in Truro, England, where enraged residents called out McDonald’s after seeing their McCrispy billboard ad right opposite Penmount Crematorium.
Critics of the ad’s position have since demanded the “tone-deaf” billboard be removed because it is offensive to families mourning the deaths of their loved ones or those visiting the crematorium.
“Although I can see the funny side, it is tasteless and I’m sure some grieving family members won’t like to see it when visiting Penmount for the funeral and cremation of a loved one,” one woman said.
“How funny it is will probably depend on how long ago you followed the crematorium sign wearing a black tie,” another added.
A third wrote: “I’m all for a good joke or two but it’s also important to think about how other people may feel when they see this. People grieve differently and I’m positive not everyone sees the funny side of this.”
Following the public’s outrage, a McDonald’s spokesperson revealed they were unaware of the sign’s proximity to the billboard ad.
They also reassured the residents that the ad will be removed and relocated.
“We were unaware of the road sign in the vicinity of this bus stop. However, in light of the concerns raised by CornwallLive, we have asked for our advertisement to be removed,” the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the council responsible for managing the crematorium refused to comment on the issue.
