Matthew Perry revealed he had woken up covered in his own feces countless times after his colon burst due to an opioid overdose.
In yet another bombshell interview that sheds new light on Perry’s decades-long addiction to drugs and alcohol, the 53-year-old Friends star explained he had to carry a colostomy bag for several months while recovering from his colon surgery.
According to the troubled actor, his colon exploded in 2018 following years of opioid abuse. At the time, he was left with just a two percent chance of survival and ended up in a coma for two weeks.
Speaking to GQ ahead of the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, he went on to recall the numerous times he woke up covered in feces after his colostomy bag ‘broke.’
“I had sh** all over my face, all over my body, in the bed next door. When it breaks, it breaks. You have to get nurses,” he said as he admitted he had to wear colostomy bags the entire time during his 5-month stay at the hospital following colon surgery.
Unfortunately, the results of the operation weren’t optimal and Perry was fitted with an ileostomy bag after several months at the hospital.
“Ten times worse. You have to deal with an ileostomy bag 18, 19 times a day. A lot of suicides with an ileostomy bag. People can’t take it,” he added.
Following a corrective surgery, the actor was able to continue living his life without an ileostomy bag. He has since been reminded of his past struggles on a daily basis by his scarred tissue and the pain that comes with it.
“I look at them with gratitude, because it helped me stay alive. But I have to live my life 24/7 with all of this scar tissue I’m constantly aware of. It feels like I’m doing a sit-up at full stretch all the time,” Perry said.
Now, following yet another round of rehab, Matthew is feeling better and is proud to be able to announce that he is sober.
“I’m pretty healthy now,” he explained as he revealed he’s “counting each day” he’s been sober.
