MasterChef star Jock Zonfrillo, who was a judge on MasterChef Australia, has died at the age of 46 after battling bowel cancer for years.
According to reports, the British-born chef was found dead in a hotel room in Melbourne after a welfare check.
He kept his health condition private and received treatment only when the Network Ten cooking program was not filming.
In a heartbreaking statement, his family said: “With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday (April 30).
“So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we’re too overwhelmed to put them into words. For those who crossed his path, became his mate, or were lucky enough to be his family, keep this proud Scot in your hearts when you have your next whisky.”
The statement continued: “We implore you to please let us grieve privately as we find a way to navigate through this and find space on the other side to celebrate our irreplaceable husband, father, brother, son, and friend.”
Network 10 confirmed that season 15 of the reality show, which was set to premiere on Monday, will not be airing for at least a week following the news of Zonfrillo’s death.
A source told Daily Mail Australia that the chef had been receiving treatment for bowel cancer since June 2021.
“No one in his circle is aware of what he is going through. Neither colleagues or friends,” the source said at that time.
The cause of death hasn’t been revealed but a spokesperson for Victoria Police said that the death was not being treated as suspicious.
“Police attended a Lygon Street address for a welfare check and located a man deceased about 2am on May 1. The 46-year-old man’s death is not being treated as suspicious,” Metro reported.
