A mass shooting at a mall in Greenwood, Indiana, resulted in four casualties after a gunman opened fire.
On Sunday afternoon, a man armed with a rifle and several magazines of ammo opened fire at the food court in Greenwood Park Mall.
After killing three people and injuring several more, the gunman was shot dead by one of the bystanders who was carrying a handgun.
Greenwood Police Chief James Ison has since the bloody massacre confirmed that a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County shot the gunman and brought the mass shooting to an end.
While the authorities have yet to confirm the mass shooter’s identity, it is believed that the gunman was an adult male who acted alone.
“It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court and began shooting,” the police chief said.
“You are seeing the best that public safety has to offer right now behind us. We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country, in our city,” Chris Bailey, chief assistant, added.
Recalling the shocking incident, a witness who works at the mall told Rafael Sanchez that she was about to end her shift when she heard “30 gunshots” and people running towards the store.
“I was just letting in as many people as I could before I shut the gate. I wanted to close the gate but people kept running at me… I have three kids at home and I just wanted to get home,” she said.
Following the shooting and the gunman’s death, the food court was evacuated.
According to the latest reports, the authorities also sent in a bomb squad after finding a ‘suspicious’ backpack in a bathroom close to where the massacre transpired.
“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers expressed as he called on witnesses to speak up and help the police with the investigation.
Paying a tribute to the victims of the mass shooting were also Indiana Senators Mike Braun and Todd Young.
“Praying for families of those killed in a senseless act of violence in Greenwood tonight, and grateful for the brave armed citizen who took action to stop the perpetrator and prevent further tragic loss of life,” Braun tweeted.
“Terrible news tonight in my home county. Praying for the victims of a shooting at the Greenwood Park Mall. Thank you to our law enforcement officers who responded,” Young wrote.
Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.
