A man who was wrongly jailed for 38 years is finally breathing the air of freedom after officially being declared innocent.
The citizen from Los Angeles was set free after DNA evidence proved his innocence, leaving the country in a state of absolute shock.
Maurice Hastings spent 38 years behind bars and while many would have expected him to be bitter and angry after his release, that was not the case. In fact, he came out with a huge smile across his face and says how happy he is to be able to count his blessings.
“This is not what anyone would have expected. I am so glad to be able to breathe a sigh of relief and freedom”- he added.
The DNA test that he undertook was clearly pointing toward another suspect. And it’s obvious that this meant he was innocent and wrongly kept behind bars.
His family and friends could be seen in a large amount, rooting and cheering for him outside of prison. They claim this is the happiest day of their lives and they’re more than grateful to the judge and jury for finally giving him justice.
Hastings had been charged with special circumstances murder and the DA office even went about keeping a death penalty for him. But it was observed that the jury was not keen on that decision.
They vowed to investigate further and carry on with the proceedings and that is what brought about different results.
“Being free from a wrongful conviction is the best feeling in the world. It means so much. I am so grateful to the judge for the ruling. History has been made”- he further elaborated while wiping tears of joy from his face.
