A 51-year-old man killed his wife in their hotel room as he wanted to stop her from ‘nagging him,’ jurors have heard.
Soong Hert Fong and his wife Pek Ying Ling had been married for 27 years. They were on their European tour when the incident happened.
According to reports, Fong smothered Ling with a pillow in their hotel room as he ‘wanted to keep her quiet.’
The couple were scheduled to meet one of their three children in Paris. But after murdering his wife, he texted his eldest son and said: “I have hurt your mother. She’s gone. She’s dead. I just lost it.
“I tried to cover her mouth to shush her. I just lost it.”
Fong claims that he has “no memory whatsoever” of the murder.
Prosecutor Peter Makepeace QC rejected these claims, arguing that the husband may have knelt on the victim’s shoulders during the attack.
“He lost his temper, he snapped and he smothered her to death, apparently to stop her scolding him or nagging him or to keep her quiet,” the prosecutor said.
After his arrest, Fong reportedly told police: “I just wanted to keep her quiet.”
Mr. Makepeace said that there was no known history of violence between the couple but one of their sons suggested that Ling used to ‘scold’ her husband.
The court heard that Fong injured his hands and buttocks after a fall during their stay at the Bosville Hotel. He then had three further falls, which led to the wife “scolding him for not taking good care of himself.”
“She wasn’t happy he was continuing to smoke while he was unwell,” Mr. Makepeace said.
Emergency services found Mrs. Pek lying with her legs hanging over the edge of the bed with a pillow over her head.
