A 41-year-old man from Texas shot four people dead, including the 4-year-old son of his ex-girlfriend, in a mass shooting that left three others injured.
Gunman Kevin Milazzo called the police to report that he had killed his family members.
Officers arrived and found his mother, Connie Mimms, 61, and stepfather William Mimms, 68, dead. Investigators said in a release that two others were found with gunshot wounds.
The Navarro County Sheriff’s Department responded to another home and found Milazzo’s son, 21-year-old Joshua, fatally shot.
They also found a woman with gunshot injuries and the lifeless body of a 4-year-old boy, Hunter Freeman.
The mother was rushed to a Dallas-area trauma center where she’s in ‘stable’ condition.
Police tracked down Milazzo’s vehicle using his GPS but as they approached his car, they found him inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.
A heartbroken friend of the family, Jerri Whitener, described Hunter as a miracle child as he was born premature weighing only 3lbs 8oz.
“Although he had a fight ahead of him to survive, this little boy surprised everyone and grew to be a healthy, beautiful, child,” Whitener wrote on Facebook.
“Hunter was also born with a cleft lip and would need surgery in the future,” the post continued.
“Pattie knew that she wanted to give Hunter a good life and him not suffer the hardships she had to endure throughout her life, so she decided to do everything she could to give him that chance.
“Unfortunately, Hunter was only on this earth for 1,511 days. On February 5, around midnight his light went out.
“Pattie struggled to make ends meet, but she did it, especially after becoming a mother. Now, she is fighting for her life. Due to her injuries, she will need years of medical care.”
