The man who was sentenced to death for killing his pregnant wife has been re-sentenced after the Supreme Court had overturned his death sentence.
48-year-old Scott Peterson is a convicted killer who was handed a death sentence after murdering his pregnant wife, 27-year-old Laci, whose body was washed ashore in San Francisco back in 2003.
After his 2005 sentence, Peterson had spent more than a decade in prison before his death sentence was overturned by a judge in 2020.
According to the reports, the death sentence was dismissed after issues with the jury selection were discovered.
Now, Peterson has been re-sentenced to life in prison without parole following a trial at the San Mateo County Courthouse.
Attending the trial was Laci’s family, including mother Sharon Rocha, brother Brent Rocha, and half-sister Amy Rocha.
Addressing Peterson, Sharon told the convicted murderer how he had betrayed his own son and her daughter.
“No matter what happens, no matter what transpires in the future, there were two things that will never change: Laci and Conner will always be dead and you will always be their murderer,” the tearful mother said.
She added: “Scott, 19 years ago today you were in the midst of planning Laci’s murder. I see no sorrow, no remorse from you at all… I still feel the grief every day, after 19 years.
“Your evil, self-centered, unforgiveable selfish act ended two beautiful souls. And for what reason? There was no reason other than that you just didn’t want them anymore. You didn’t want a baby nor the responsibility of being a father. You’re a coward.
“I have dreams about her. And sometimes when I wake up, I cry because they’re so realistic and I know I’ll never see her again.”
Breaking into tears was also Laci’s sister Amy who couldn’t believe how her sibling’s killer continues living knowing what he had done.
“It makes me sick being in front of you today,” she said.
Meanwhile, Brent recalled her sibling as a “vibrant young woman who was living life to the fullest” and had an “infectious smile.”
“The sociopathic actions of Scott Peterson and the disregard for Laci and Connor’s lives warrant the most severe punishment,” the brother said.
Throughout the trial, Peterson sat still in his red jumpsuit, whereas he failed to react or show any emotion following the statements of the victim’s family.
Despite the overwhelming evidence suggesting otherwise, Peterson maintains his innocence and says his partner and their unborn son were killed by burglars who allegedly robbed their neighbor’s home on the day Laci disappeared.
