A young man was killed by lightning while enjoying his vacation in Greece with his girlfriend.
26-year-old Scott Seddon from the UK was paddleboarding off Agia Agathi coast in Rhodes, Greece, when he was suddenly struck by a lightning bolt while his girlfriend was filming him.
According to the reports, the young man was electrocuted to death and could not be rescued after the emergency services arrived at the scene.
His family and friends have since spoken out to pay tribute to the aspiring civil engineer who loved sports and was known as a “popular” and “lovely” guy.
“I spoke to his dad and he told me Scott had been electrocuted. He said he was distraught. He couldn’t say any more. He’s heartbroken,” a source close to the Seddons told MailOnline.
“His sister flew out there last night to be with the rest of the family. Scott was a lovely guy and really popular. He used to live in Greece with the family and spoke Greek. He loved it there but now they go and visit there holiday home there and live back here now.”
Recalling the tragedy at sea was also 47-year-old Brazilian tourist Wander Machado who told the Greek media that he rushed to Scott’s aid after witnessing the electrocution.
“I swam to get him out. But once I reached the board, I saw his body crouched over and face down on the board. His face had turned purple,” Machado said.
“I immediately knew that every second was crucial and started pulling him to the shore.”
While witnesses claimed the young man was still alive by the time he was pulled out of the water, he could not be rescued despite the combined efforts of his girlfriend, onlookers, and the emergency services.
“I was worried that the same thing would happen to me as it was still raining but I didn’t stop,” Machado added.
“The rescuers arrived shortly afterwards and performed all the resuscitation procedures to keep him alive. Unfortunately, I found out a little later that he didn’t make it.”
