A 53-year-old man from Oklahoma has been arrested for killing his fishing partner because he believed that the victim ‘summoned Bigfoot’ to eat him during their trip on the South Canadian River.
Larry Doil Sanders was charged with first-degree murder after admitting to police that he killed Jimmy Knighten.
He reportedly ‘struck, strangled and drowned’ the victim before returning home and telling a family member, officers said.
Sheriff John Christian said that the 53-year-old “appeared to be under the influence of something” when authorities confronted him.
“His statement was that Mr. Knighten had summoned ‘Bigfoot’ to come and kill him; that’s why he had to kill Mr. Knighten,” Christian said.
The incident happened on Saturday outside Ada city limits.
Capt. Beth Green of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Sanders ‘believed that Mr. Knighten had basically tricked him into being out there.’
The man believed Knighten summoned Bigfoot, which resulted in an argument for almost an hour.
After killing his friend, Sanders returned to Knighten’s home in the victim’s truck.
He reportedly dumped the body in the river but authorities managed to find the remains on July 10.
The victim’s ex-wife and friend Stacey Kelley said: “He’s just a good old country boy. He is a person that would genuinely love you to death.”
According to reports, Knighten’s son is dating Sander’s daughter.
“I am heartbroken for (Sanders’) family and especially his kids,” Kelley said. “Not only are they tied to Jimmy, but now they have to live with the fact that their dad is the one that did this.”
Christian said that authorities will “still have to prove all the elements of the crime, and that what the suspect is telling you is actually what happened.”
