A man with dementia who had disappeared just one day before his wife passed away was found dead.
78-year-old David McLeod from Galashiels, Scotland, went missing on December 16 after going to the store to buy a newspaper and failing to return home.
On the following day, the former construction worker’s wife passed away following a battle with brain cancer. Two days later, on December 19, McLeod’s body was found in the countryside several miles from his home.
As the couple’s devastated family has since revealed, the senior man likely died around the same time as his wife of 60 years, whereas his watch stopped exactly the same time – at 12.55 am – his wife died.
The family also revealed how the loving couple, who left behind three children and dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, would always tell them that “if one died first the other would meet them on the way.”
“The McLeod family far and wide would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for sharing our dad’s and grandad’s information and photo,” the family expressed in a statement after the double tragedy.
“Also a huge thank you to the public and all professional services who were keeping an eye out for grandad. More importantly the gentleman who found grandad and enabled us to bring him home.”
They added: “It looks like he died around about the same time as ‘the wife’ as he called her on the first night missing. Dave and Sandra will be sorely missed by all family and friends.
“As anyone who knew them knew they loved nothing more than to have a house full of family around them. They were together through life for 63 years and will now continue their journey together in death.”
Our thoughts are with the McLeod family during these challenging times.
