A man fell hundreds of feet to his death while taking pictures during a hike with his wife.
59-year-old Joe ‘Eggy’ Eggleston was on a mission to reach the summit of Mount Willard in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, with his wife, 57-year-old Kelly, on Saturday morning.
While everything went as planned and the couple swiftly reached the peak, a tragedy happened suddenly when they decided to take photos of the beautiful view from the scenic mountain.
According to Kelly, she turned around when she heard her husband yelling only to see him dangling from the edge of the rocky summit.
Unfortunately, the Mount Washington Cog Railway steam engineer was unable to pull himself to safety and went on to plunge 300 feet to his death.
While Kelly immediately called 911, it wasn’t until three hours later that Mountain Rescue Service reached her husband due to icy conditions and his location.
When Eggy was finally found, he was pronounced dead on the scene. The authorities have since confirmed that his body was located some three hundred feet beneath the summit.
“A tragic loss of a great man and a true Cogger. RIP to Joe ‘Eggy’ Eggleton,” Andy Vanguard, one of the deceased man’s friends, said in a tribute after the tragic news.
“Eggy’s warm smile and passion for what he did will always be remembered by those he touched. I’m honored to have shared a cab with him.
“His home will always be in the mountains he loved. That whistle will forever echo off those peaks for you.”
Another coworker and friend, Denise Biguin, added: “Mornings at work will never be the same. I was always greeted by that bright smile he shared with everyone.
“It was an honor to have known such a wonderful person.”
Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends during this challenging time.
