A man fell hundreds of feet to his death while visiting a mountain ridge where he proposed to his wife nearly three decades ago.
54-year-old Jamie Butler was a doctor and a former senior medic for Manchester City who plunged some 300 feet to his death after losing his balance on top of Striding Edge, a mountain ridge in the Lake District national park in England.
According to the reports, Dr. Butler and his wife were on a romantic hike to revisit the spot where they got engaged 27 years ago when the accident happened.
While attempting to find the exact same spot where he had proposed all those years ago, Butler allegedly lost his footing due to poor visibility caused by mist and fell to his death.
His body was later discovered by rescuers beneath the ridge. According to the inquest, the man suffered severe injuries including a fractured skull.
“He was a really fantastic guy who didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone. He was very loved by the staff and players at both Sale & Man City… you just couldn’t not warm to him,” physiotherapist Doug Jones, who worked with Butler for professional rugby union Sale Sharks, said in a tribute to the deceased doctor.
“In his last treatment before he died he stopped me in the waiting room and asked me to walk out with him to his car. The last thing he said to me was that he was so happy to see how Altius [physiotherapy and treatment clinic in Hale] had grown from nothing to what it is now and that I should be very proud of the whole team there.
“A wonderful guy who I am sure will be very missed by his family and friends.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Butler said:
“Jamie was a loving husband with two twin boys who he adored. He will be forever missed. He died doing what he loved.”
Our thoughts are with Butler’s family and friends during these challenging times.
