A young man fell to his death while trying to take a photo of himself on top of a steep mountain peak.
21-year-old Richard Jacobson from Mesa, Arizona, was a respectful young man who loved nature and found comfort in hiking and camping in the wilderness.
On Monday, the young man suffered a cruel end as he plunged 700 feet to his death after attempting to take a selfie on top of Superstition Mountain’s Flatiron Peak.
According to the reports, Richard was camping in Lost Dutchman State Park together with his unnamed friend who witnessed the fatal fall and called for help on Monday morning.
No foul play is suspected and it is believed that the 21-year-old suffered a fatal fall while taking selfies.
“Mr. Jacobson went to go take a photograph with himself and the city skyline in the background, and he lost his footing, and he slipped, and he fell,” Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue confirmed in a statement to AZFamily.com.
“I can tell you that during our investigation, there [were] no signs of foul play. No signs of drug use whatsoever. It was just a very tragic accident.”
Following the young man’s tragic death, his friend, Andrew Thomas, told DailyMail.com how everyone loved Richard and how he treated everyone with respect.
“He really was one of those guys that everyone loved, and it’s sad to lose him, but we know that it’s not the end. We’re going to see him again,” Thomas, who was on a mission trip in Richland together with Richard back in 2020, said.
“He was an outdoorsman, hunter, hiker. He did stuff like that, so I guess he did die doing what he loved to do, just in a tragic way.”
